Landlords in England and Wales will be required to register on a national register of landlords run by an independent organisation.

Landlord would have to pay every year a fee to be in register, this fee would use towards the register's administrative costs.

Landlords would have to advise on the tenancy agreements their registration number and could be removed from register for poor performance.

I think this is great news for the industry. I'm currently renting a flat and feel that there have not been enough measures in place to protect tenants from rogue landlords.

I think with the growing trend for those who may be struggling to sell their home to rent their property out instead means that there's an increasing number of 'accidental' landlords and the sector needs regulating to make sure tenants are safeguarded against poor practices.

Surely this can only be a good thing for the industry because it'll boost tenants' confidence in their landlords and improve the relationship. The rental sector has been needing a scheme like this for years.
